LOCAL NEWS: Gay Students Get Support
Lucas students Sarah Holmes and Keegan MacNeil attended the 5th annual gay-straight alliance conference, organized by the Thames Valley District School Board Safe Schools on Friday at board office in London. There were 150 students and teachers representing 28 schools who attended the event. (SUE REEVE The London Free Press)
Dozens of students from 22 high schools across the Thames Valley District school board gathered at its London headquarters Friday for a gay-straight alliance conference.
And though the theme of the conference was “it gets better” – playing on an international campaign to tell lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youths that life gets better after the struggles and bullying many face in high school – it was easy to tell that, in many ways, it already is better.
“This is a miracle, what is happening now, compared to where I came from,” said London author Donald D’Haene, who spoke about his tortured youth and the bullying he faced as a teenager.
“I never heard one student or teacher talk about anything gay in a positive way in all my 12 years of school,” he said.
Thirty years later, there were many teachers in the crowd and 20 of the board’s 28 high schools have gay-straight alliances – set up by students with the support of staff in an effort to provide a comfortable, accepting environment for all students at the school.
