HEALTH: Breakthrough in the fight against HIV
HIV drugs reduce risk to partners
A new research trial has shown that if a HIV-positive person follows an effective antiretroviral therapy regimen, the risk of transmitting the virus to their uninfected sexual partner can be reduced by 96%.
The trial involved more than 1,700 couples in which one partner was HIV positive and the other was HIV negative. The couples were from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the US. The trial was carried out by the US National Institutes of Health.
The reduction of sexual transmission of HIV was so significant that the trial was stopped three to four years ahead of schedule.
“This is a crucial development because we know that sexual transmission accounts for about 80% of all new infections,” commented Dr Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organisation (WHO). [READ MORE]
