[LOCAL NEWS] Pride growing up in London, Ontario (via Xtra!)

Pride growing up in London, Ontario
NEWS / New location makes the celebration stand out
Katie Toth / Toronto / Tuesday, July 10, 2012
Organizers of Pride in London, Ontario, are ready to come out—of the parking lot, that is.
Participants in the annual gay pride week there will be putting themselves in the front and centre of the city, ending with a weekend-long festival in Victoria Park.
Victoria Park is the city’s major event site, hosting other festivals like Ribfest and the Home County Folk Festival. For Pride vice president Andrew Rosser, taking the space is a sign that London Pride is ready to take its place as a highlight of the city.
“We’re excited to move into a mainstream festival location,” he says, noting it’s a watershed moment. Last year, the Pride festival was held in a parking lot at the corner of Clarence and King Streets, he says.
The weekend in the park will include a stage with kid-friendly entertainment, and a “pet zone” for dogs to drink water and play. The event ends with a Sunday afternoon post-parade party, featuring Canadian rock band The Cliks.
The full week of festivities also includes an all-ages Pride party, gay karaoke, and prayer service at the Metropolitan Community Church.
In London, Pride’s rocky history is a recent memory.  “Every gay person in London, lesbian, gay, bisexual, [or] transgendered person, would say they know of or experienced an act of hatred in our city,” says Rosser. “Although I don’t think that’s unique to our city, we have to recognize that it exists.”
In 1995, organizers requested that then-mayor Dianne Haskett issue a city proclamation in support of their Pride march. She refused. The incident led to a three-year legal battle. In October of 1997, the Ontario Human Rights Commission fined the mayor and city $10,000 and ordered city council to make the proclamation.
Haskett, who is now a lawyer in Washington, DC, did not answer calls for comment.
Later, in 1999, the 3,500-strong parade found itself crossing paths with about 70 heterosexual “straight pride” counter-marchers. Some of the counter-marchers carried signs; one wore a construction helmet and used a bullhorn to denounce the gay event. Rosser says similar protests still happen. “There’s always a small group,” he says. “But it never affects our celebration.”
The city’s next mayor, Anne Marie DeCiccio-Best, wrote letters of support but never took part in the parade, Rosser says.
It wasn’t until 2011 that a new London mayor, Joe Fontana, made history and attended the city’s event. It was the same year Toronto’s Rob Ford broke tradition and refused to attend Pride Toronto, taking his family to the cottage instead.
Organizers are confident that this year, London Pride will be a week of celebration.
“We just really want everyone to come out, gay or straight,” Rosser says. “Pride is about celebrating together as one community.”
Pride London Festival runs from July 22 to 29. For more information visit pridelondon.ca

[LAVISH] “A Relaxed Vibe” Blog Post | ELEVATE Grand Opening June 9

POST RAIN STORM ON ELEVATE, May 27, 2011

A RELAXED VIBE

[BLOGGED @] ELEVATE ROOFTOP PATIO

[LISTENING TO] ‘Strange Condition’ House Mix

Saturday night we doubled the number of people we usually have at LAVISH – there were so many new faces!  Usually this time of year the students go home, and the city starts to wind down in numbers.  Last night had the opposite effect at LAVISH & ELEVATE (L&E)!  The party was great and the vibe felt new & fresh!

It’s a really nice change in scene.  The wild student crowd (they are so much fun!) fades into a more relaxed vibe with an eclectic mix of local socials.  It’s great that all my downtown neighbors are also visiting L&E each weekend.  The new relaxed atmosphere is amazing, yet you can still go down to LAVISH and dance your asses off to DJ Pablo Ramirez on Saturdays!

For the first time in 3 1/2 years we’re changing the weekly name of Fridays from “JBY” to “The Social”.  We’ll be featuring different LAVISH mixes (by DJ Eddy) earlier in the night from 8PM-11PM on ELEVATE. This weekend we’ll feature the ‘Strange Condition’ House Mix. (extended play).  I love the melodic vocals in this mix and it sounds amazing under the sky!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 9th! I encourage everyone to try one of downtown’s amazing restaurants then join us on the rooftop at 8PM!  It’s the big ELEVATE Grand Opening and we got lots of amazing entertainment for you!  Local fashion designers from Fanshawe College are also putting on a fashion show with their exclusive summer line!

I’m still taking in all the excitement and can’t wait to soon relax with everyone after the Grand Opening! Have an amazing week & see you next weekend!

[INSIDE SCOOP] ELEVATE Rooftop Patio – How it all started…

Well, I was gonna save my patio spiel for the grand opening on Saturday, June 9th (event soon to be launched). But since the patio…& the weather were ahead of schedule, I may as well give you the inside scoop on LAVISH’ baby brother ELEVATE.

Believe it or not, a rooftop patio was in the plan since day one. Money ran short so it only made sense to hold the project off and gradually ELEVATE “above lavish”. First we had the caged fence that kept falling over. Then we built the 20′ x 6′ fenced pig pen patio. Next was the 20′ x 15′ jail cell smoking patio with soaring 20′ walls… Which is now a beautiful glass railing stairwell leading to the new 20′ x 50′ rooftop patio we call ELEVATE.

Summer of 2011 I sampled many rooftop patios across Toronto, “…I really want to bring a piece of this to my city!”.  The ideas were grande & exciting and the investment would be over the top! It was a big risk but I had to finally take that dive into the deep end…and it couldn’t be half ass. I think London (especially the downtown core) deserves the best so it only made sense to build something Londoners would be really proud of!

It started with a 10 minute coffee meeting with my contractor, weeks of planning , 4 months of solid work, then the vision became reality.  Thank you to all my contractors involved with the project & a bigger thank you to all the LAVISH regulars who have been so patient with the construction inconveniences. I couldn’t have gotten this far if it wasn’t for you!

The two soft opening weekends of testing the waters out have been immensely successful and the excitement has rippled out to many folks I’ve never seen before! A big thanks to my staff for all their hard work maintaining a safe space for the LGBTQ community and everyone who loves to party at London’s most diverse nightclub & now roof top patio.
