[LOCAL NEWS] Smoking ban may hit bar patios (London Free Press)
If this smoking ban passes it will be a big slap in the face for bar owners who built patios to cater to the smoking by law change years ago. Now if you can’t smoke on patios it will have to be on the streets. Do you want hoards of drunk people smoking on the streets at night? Think about it city politicians. Not to mention the LAVISH rooftop patio investment going down the drain. Not impressed.
Smoking ban may hit bar patios
By Randy Richmond, The London Free Press
A proposed new smoking ban that would snuff out cigarettes on restaurant and bar patios seems bound to light up debate at city hall Monday. At least one member of the committee set to debate the ban says he’ll push for it, while another says he’ll push back.
“There are more and more regulations and rules about what you can do when you wake up in the morning,” Coun. Dale Henderson said.
“Smoking is legal. I’ll push back on this.”
But fellow community services committee member Coun. Harold Usher is just as determined to make sure the ban gets approved.
“People have the right to smoke, but they don’t have the right to harm the health of other people.”
The Middlesex-London Health Unit wants London and Middlesex councils to ban smoking in dozens of outdoor areas, including parks, swimming pools, playgrounds, municipally owned recreation facilities, festivals and outdoor bar and restaurant patios.
When the health unit voted 6-5 to recommend the ban, there was little opposition to stopping smoking in places where children and adults play.
But there was opposition from area politicians at the prospect of making bar and restaurant owners stop people from smoking on their patios, many of them built or renovated to satisfy a ban on indoor smoking nine years ago.
“I don’t like it,” Henderson said of the new proposed ban. “You are punishing smokers and making them second-class citizens.”
London’s 2003 ban on smoking in restaurants led to a tumultuous two-year battle that put restaurant and bar owners in the uncomfortable position of defending the unhealthy habit.
Last fall, when the health unit voted to recommend the new ban, restaurant owners told The Free Press they opposed the idea, but weren’t eager to embark on another public relations battle they’d likely lose.
Henderson and Usher both said they hadn’t heard much from the public or restaurant owners since the ban was proposed last fall.
“We’ll hear about it more after the vote,” Usher predicted.
Policy makers have a responsibility to make the city safer, especially when it’s so clear second-hand smoke causes health problems, he said.
If the five-person community services committee endorses the ban Monday it would have to be approved by city council.
The health unit is recommending public consultation take place before any new ban comes into force.

[LAVISH] ‘Bollywood Nights’ Weekend Recap
Thanks for spicing it up with us for our first bollywood night at LAVISH! It was a huge success and we had a blast putting the whole themed event together! Although themed events require much more time, effort and money, it’s so worth it when 12:30 strikes and the ‘stars are aligned’ for a quick 5 minutes:
1. The decor
2. The packed club
3. People dancing to the bollywood jam
4. The bollywood show starts
5. …And then the crowd goes wild!
Most people don’t even recollect this “magical moment” (LOL), but I soak in those 5 minutes like no other and that makes the extra effort worth it! Normally mid-January is when LAVISH does the ‘Garden Of Eden’ party but we wanted to mix it up a bit and I couldn’t resist Bollywood! Saturday started out with a shopping trip to purchase pink and orange fabric. With the help of my good friends Jake & Pablo we managed to put it up in 3 hours – and this time none of the decor got ripped down by the end of the night – SCORE!
During decorating hours I got a text from Cardiff (local drag queen) who wanted to open for Cassandra. I thought why not, this could entertaining…and it sure was! When her Sari (Indian dress) started falling off all I could think was “shit, I hope no one is getting offended”. With that said, Cardiff continues to grow as an drag performer…
In cased you missed (or couldn’t remember) Cassandra Moore’s performance, Ben Clouthier captured the amazing show! The beautiful outfits were custom made especially for ‘Bollywood Nights’, and the Bollywood style performance to Rihanna’s smash hit ‘We Found Love’ got people wild!
