HIV drugs reduce risk to partners
A new research trial has shown that if a HIV-positive person follows an effective antiretroviral therapy regimen, the risk of transmitting the virus to their uninfected sexual partner can be reduced by 96%.
The trial involved more than 1,700 couples in which one partner was HIV positive and the other was HIV negative. The couples were from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the US. The trial was carried out by the US National Institutes of Health.
The reduction of sexual transmission of HIV was so significant that the trial was stopped three to four years ahead of schedule.
“This is a crucial development because we know that sexual transmission accounts for about 80% of all new infections,” commented Dr Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organisation (WHO). [READ MORE]

HEALTH: Tops & Bottoms Wanted for HIV Vaccine Study
GET ON TOP of HIV PREVENTION and VOLUNTEER
Every 10 minutes, someone in the United States is infected with HIV. A preventive vaccine against HIV offers the best long-term hope to end this worldwide epidemic. Finding a safe and effective HIV vaccine that will protect people is a huge task. We cannot do it without your help.
* We are currently seeking 1350 men who have sex with men to participate in a vaccine trial.
* You cannot become infected with HIV from the vaccines
* The study will take place in several cities in the United States.
Safety is a primary goal of the vaccine trial. This is a Phase II study, designed to yield limited information on the effectiveness of the vaccine. The research vaccines have been found to be safe in animals and hundreds of humans in previous trials. One of the vaccines is made from an inactivated cold virus known as an adenovirus. The vaccines do NOT contain the HIV virus, and CANNOT cause HIV infection. Since these vaccines are still being researched, we urge all of our participants to practice safe sex.
HEALTH: Warnings on Gonorrhea ’Super Bug’ Coming True
Health experts have warned for years that a treatment-resistant strain of gonorrhea was emerging. Now, according to a MyHealthNewsDaily article, those warnings may be coming true.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned as early as April of 2007 that the organism that causes gonorrhea has been growing ever more resistant to currently available treatments. As the number of available effective drugs capable of curing the disease dwindles, the prospects grow for the sexually transmitted infection to reach “superbug” status–meaning that it will be all but incurable.
The CDC’s report of three years ago noted that the newer, more resistant strain of the disease accounted for around 25% of new cases in major cities such as Philadelphia and San Francisco. At the same time, infection rates have been climbing in the gay community, according to studies. [FULL STORY]
